Sometimes you go through something and it hurts and you don’t know how or if you’ll ever recover. But weeks go by and the world moves on and your only option is to move on with it. One day you wake up and your eyes don’t sting from crying and you realize you’ve slept through the night for the first time in a long time. You might feel guilty or confused. How could you be okay? You think maybe you’re neglecting your emotions and they’ll sneak up on you out of nowhere, dragging you back down to where you just were. Until one day you’re driving home and you find yourself singing, looking forward to your dinner plans and you catch a glimpse of yourself in the rearview mirror. You look like you and the energy rushing through your body feels a little bit like bliss. You think maybe it’s possible you didn’t break. Maybe all this time, you were stronger than you thought. Maybe this means you could survive anything and perhaps you finally decide that you want to. You notice the sun is up and it’s draped on your skin and it feels good. Was it always this bright? One day laughter begins pouring out of you the way it used to: without a lump blocking your throat. One day you’re with your friends and you’re present again. You have entire conversations without your mind wandering to that thing that you thought was the end of your life. One day you stop feeling guilty for being okay. One day you decide you’re alive again and it might not seem like it now, but you’re becoming someone else and that person is powerful.
